65th Annual Southeastern Archaeological Conference Presentation, November 12-15, 2008

The History Workshop's Carol Poplin attended the SEAC conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. She presented a paper titled, "As a Living Part of Our Community: Sharing the Past with the Public through CRM.” Carol's paper focuses on the cultural resource management industry. The industry has conducted federal and state mandated archaeological and historical investigations since the 1966 National Historical Protection Act, yet the industry has not always shared with the public the information it finds. The paper explores the challenges of presenting archaeology to the public and offers ideas for breaking the boundaries that often exist between archaeological research and public interpretation.

Ellis Square History Project - August 4, 2007

The History Workshop has been selected to work with the City of Savannah to document and record the history of Ellis Square. One of the original squares laid out by General James Oglethorpe, Ellis Square has played a pivotal and often controversial role in Savannah's history. It served as the city market until the early 1950's, when the historic building was demolished; a parking garage was constructed in its place. Today the city is restoring the square as a public park. The History Workshop's research will culminate in the production of a 20-minute documentary to be shown at the square's visitors' center, as well as tools and materials for education and outreach to be used by the City and members of the community.
