Agricultural Museum
Blackville, South Carolina
Components: Interpretive panels; Replica garden, barn, and porch; Historic implements
The Blackville Agricultural Heritage Museum is located on the grounds of the Edisto Research and Education Center near Blackville, South Carolina. The museum is housed in one of the original research station buildings. The History Workshop began their partnership with the museum by developing a plan to create a coherent story for the eleven rooms on two floors that housed their collection of early twentieth century furniture, equipment, and artifacts.
Our story takes visitors through the activities necessary to house and feed a farm family to the trials, tribulations and successes of making a living as a farmer in early 20th century South Carolina. One room is dedicated to the work of scientists at the Edisto Research Station and their efforts to help farmers through better farming practices. The History Workshop helped update the existing artifact exhibits in the museum by adding colorful and informative interpretive panels about early rural farm life in Barnwell County and the surrounding region. We constructed a "raised garden bed" complete with vegetables to create a fun display space.
