STEP THREE

Concept Development

Once we have a good footing on the subject matter, we can begin to develop exhibit ideas around that subject. This includes brainstorming general design concepts and forming an idea of what the exhibit should communicate to visitors. We combine the use of interpretive panels, artifact cases, kiosks, and labels along with audio and visual presentations to discover the best path for the exhibit to take.

Many things need to be taken into consideration during the concept development phase, especially dealing with the physical space of the venue. Is the environment enclosed or open-air? What material is the flooring? We also need to make sure the clients' special needs are met. For Point Peter, the client wanted to incorporate several media types into a small space. One of the solutions we found was to use artifact cases with built-in storage for museum supplies. For The Peach Museum, the client didn't want to lose any natural light and the space had windows entirely on one side. The solution we found was to print onto Plexiglas.

Creative thinking is important for all steps of the process and that is especially true for concept development.
